HostMySite.com issues
07/16/07 2:21 PM

Hi all, to follow up on my last post about looking for cheap hosting. I went with HostMySite.com and while it seems really good and the service is really prompt, I am having trouble resolving an issue with refreshing the Cache.
After clearing the cache, when I go to the page I get the following error.
Error Executing Database Query.
Communication link failure: Unknown command

seems to be a problem with the operator in the where clause.
Anyhow, I saw the post on this forum that talks about a problem using the default MySQL3 driver with mySQL and BlogCFC.
So, I spoke with support and they said, they are using the only driver supplied and cannot change it.

OK, My real question is, Is anyone else using HostMySite.com for BlogCFC?
If so, how have you worked around this problem?
Thank you, Fred

I was but I've now moved to GearHost after having had a LOT of issues with BlogCFC on HostMySite. Their support which is considered top notch (and had been for every other issue I've had there) was completely unhelpful with this issue.

The thing is, you'll have to ask them to install the JDBC connector for the MySQL server and create a special DSN for it for you as you won't be able to from the control panel. Then, they'll have to increase time out settings on the connections.

You would think that the HMS support staff would know how to deal with this issue by now since it had been going on for months on my own blog before I decided I'd had enough and moved all my sites to GearHost. They even had the gall to put the responsibility entirelly on me and never made any real effort to look into the issue deeper to solve it. I'm more of a designer/front-end guy so the finer points of tuning CF to MySQL connections is a bit beyond my expertise but it should be their responsibility to figure out. The last email I sent them detailing the reasons I was leaving was VERY clear about the reasons why. I can't believe they are not more proactive in your case too, especially since they all went through it with me for a long time.

The GearHost support staff went above and beyond for me on these issues and went as far as reading the actual BlogCFC docs themselves to find out if it had any special requirements. They usually respond to support tickets within minutes (not hours) and will do all they can to actually cooperate with you and solve the problem.

Btw, my site is at www.pixelyzed.com (click the pixellog link for the blog).

I'm glad you found a new home. I really do wish I could make things easier for people, but the sad truth is that if you want to use MySQL, you really do need that custom driver.

This problem is not your fault Ray. You state clearly in your docs that BlogCFC needs this driver and it's the best option tu use CF with MySQL anyway. I pointed that out to HMS when I started having a bunch of timeout issues. I don't know what version they installed but they had to "reconfigure" it (or whatever) 2 or 3 times before the errors started to subside.

But after making a few blog posts, search engine bots started to spider my blog more aggressively and the errors got even worse. Those erros disappeared entirely after moving to GearHost as they seem to be running more up to date versions of everything and the actual hardware of the server my sites are on seem newer.

In any case, here's an interesting new post directly related to this issue I just saw in FeeDemon:

I'm on HostMySite. I have three blogs using BlogCFC. I haven't had any problems with database connection. I have contacted them to get my DSN properly set up, it took one or two times, but so far they have been good. Ray and the others can give you a possible fix, I just wanted you to know that it can be done on HMS.

My only problem is the CAPTCHA isn't genereating an image, which isn't a great concern since I'll be using the forum for discussion, but is annoying. I haven't been able to focus on it yet.

RE: Even MORE HostMySite.com issues

While the following is not directly related to the BlogCFC/MySQL driver issue - I'm posting this as it's related to HostMySite and anyone who uses their shared hosting.

For more info check my blog post at: http://www.gideonmarken.com/index.cfm/blog/1690/

Did you know that HostMySite does the following?

"All ColdFusion processes must complete in under 50 seconds. If a process takes 50 seconds or longer, the process gets cancelled."

* This is not written on their site.
* This is not listed as a feature of their hosting packages.
* This is not listed in the Admin area where you manage your site.
* Apparently, not even the general support staff know about this limitation.
* If they kill off your processes, they don’t inform you - you would have to discover that it is happening either on your own or if you are lucky, a user would inform you

The above quote is directly from a support email and came to light after I discovered that the largest file I could upload using ColdFusion and their servers was only 550k.

HostMySite.com Support:
The timeout error that you are receiving is from a program that we run on our ColdFusion servers called SeeFusion. It is set to kill any cf process that runs longer then 50 seconds. SeeFusion was implemented to increase the stability of our ColdFusion servers, which it has done. The only way to avoid this timeout on a shared server would be to use a different method of uploading, like ASPupload. Alternately, you could go to a VPS.

BTW - Ray Rocks :)
