Lost Review for 11-1-06

Sorry about this being late folks. Cox is going to fix up my net access today (supposedly) and I'll be back online for good. (Or until it breaks again.)

Another great episode - unfortunately the last we will see of Eco (unless he returns as other dead castaways have). In this episode we get to see what happened to Eco after his brother flew away in the plane with the drug dealers. He returns to his brother's church and helps stop a gang of thieves from stealing drugs from the village. In doing so though he desecrates the church and the villages close it up. The local doctor tells Eco he now "owes" his brother a new church. (And now we know why he was building a church.)

Back in real time, Eco is visited by the ghost of his brother. He goes off into the forest to find the plane where his brother's body was. During his trek we see the black smoke. (Woohoo! I loved the black smoke monster.) Locke (and friends) figure this out, and since they wanted to go to Pearl station anyway, they follow Eco.

At Pearl, they play with the TVs a bit and end up finding a new location and a new person. The person wears an eye patch. Is he an Other? If so - I don't think we have seen him before. He looked more like another castaway perhaps.

Eco is outside the hatch when the ghost of his brother approaches. Eco follows him. His brother tells Eco that he has to confess his sins. Eco however says he did what he had to do to survive and protect his brother. This upsets his brother - and he goes away. Eco follows him and what was once his brother is now the black smoke monster. Oh, and it's pissed. The monster picks him up and slams him against the trees - and then finally against the ground.

Locke (and friends) leave the hatch to find Eco just about to die. As he passes, he whispers to Locke that they are next.

So - back to the Others and Jack. Ben tells Jack that their original plan was to break him, gain his trust, and make Jack feel for them so they they could use him. Now Ben says this is out the window since Jack knows about the cancer. Ben says he wants Jack to perform the surgery but won't force him to. He then asks him to attend the funeral of the girl who died. The funeral is pretty weird. They burn the body on the water while playing some pretty freaky music.

Later on - blonde Other girl (yes, I forgot her name again) plays a video while talking to Jack. The video is a secret message saying that some of the Others want to change things, and that Jack should let Ben die on the operating table.

Personally - I think Blonde Other Girl is doing exactly what Ben said they would try to do - gain his trust. I'd be willing to bet she is the one in charge - or at least orchestrating all of this to gain Jack's trust.

Comments

The girls name is Juliette, Ray. The funeral wasn't that weird, it was like in ancient times when the didn't bury them, they put them on rafts and burned them. I disagree with you on Juliette's message to Jack. I think it's a coup attempt within the others and some want Ben ousted but are afraid of him as I think he has the friendship of some of the more aggressive others.

You have to admit the music was a bit weird.

Stupid black smoke. I liked Adebisi.

Ray, I agree with you that Juliette is still manipulating Jack, although we've seen at least two scenes where she has been at least mildly confrontational with Ben, so maybe she's the more "evil" of the two and is just trying to get Ben out of the way; he found out about his cancer several years ago, so why were his X-rays just hanging around where Jack would just happen to see them? I can't believe that Eco is dead - he was my favorite character! And now they're trying to add these two new schlubs from the beach to the cast?

But you didn't mention the worst part of this episode - they said that next week is the Fall season FINALE! Meaning that we get to have another six month "hiatus" like last year! I'd like to set ABC on fire and put them out to sea! Argh!

I've mentioned the hiatus before though. Is it 6 months? I thought it was February. Either way - it is still MUCH quicker than Sopranos.

Just checked - it returns Feb 7. So - less then 4 months. Still a long time - but better than 6 months. ;)

Oh wow, check this out:

"Lost" producers hope a re-run free split season will help redeem the series and bring viewers back. "Lost" will run for six episodes then break for 13 weeks, returning with 17 more episodes to be broadcast without reruns. The network will compensate the advertisers by running extended versions of the episodes in a straight run following the completion of the third season. The extended versions will add additional footage into the season three episodes in an attempt to lure die-hard viewers back for another look.

I'm beginning to wonder if Ben isn't really the "good" one of the leaders. I'm beginning to think Juliette is way more manipulative than what we're lead to believe.

I really hope they get into what the "smoke" is. Also, I'm wondering if the image of Eco's brother was real (just someone who looked like Emil) or whether it was the cause of the smoke. They made a reference earlier about how Juliette was chosen 'cause she looks like Jack's ex-wife. This got me wondering if some of the "ghosts" people have seen have been just "Others" who look like their dead loved ones...

I think Eco's brother was the black smoke taking a shape. Man - the more I think about it - the more I loved that scene with Eco kneeling before him. For a second there I thought they were going to imply that the smoke was the Devil.

By the way - am I the only one who thought, "RED SHIRT!" when those 2 new folks joined the gang?

p.s. If you have to ask - don't bother. ;)

"he found out about his cancer several years ago,"

I thought Ben said he found out he had it /two/ days before a spinal surgeon fell out of the sky...?

That's funny... while we were watching I said "she's a 'red shirt'" too. :)

Why doesn't the island heal Benry (like it healed Locke and Rose)?

Is it coincidence that the black smoke came back shortly after Sun shot the Other woman on the sailboat?

Why did the writers even introduce the tailies? Now all of them are dead except Bernard... and we haven't seen him at all this season.

Yea, they need to kill the split season idea. "24" did after their third season and have run each of the last two without interruption, which is really nice (not to mention the two-night, four-episode binger they kick the season off with...talk about getting the ball rolling!). I know from some cast interviews that it messed up the production schedules, but they felt catering to the fans for the season was best. Unfortunately, the exchange means that from approx. May through January you get nothing, but it's worth it.

Jen,

Your comment makes me wonder if the island is the only reason he is still alive? Maybe he came to the island for that reason?

Just a thought on the Black Smoke, but did any of you read "Prey" by Michael Crichton? In their the swarm of tiny nano-objects could take the form of human's. This could explain the smoke. It may not be smoke at all, but a swarm of nano-objects like in Prey. Just a thought.

If you haven't seen this yet, check out Entertainment Weekly's article on Lost http://www.ew.com/ew/article/commentary/0,6115,155...

The info about the morphogenetic field is really interesting.

I forgot to mention that Juliette's description of making the hamburger dinner for Jack falls in line with the Morphic field theory. Crazy stuff... seems to have it's roots in Aristotle, but incorporates quantam mechanics. Man... Lost rocks!!!

Ben's remark that Juliette resembled Jack's ex-wife kinda threw me as I didn't notice that - and Jack's behaviour didn't seem to give that away as well. I'm still not sure whether to trust her or not myself.

Andrew, I'm with you. The only commonality between Juliette and Jack's ex (actress Julie Bowen from "Ed") is that they're both blondes. I mean they're both attractive, of course, but similar? Not even close.
