CFCDev is Dead (For Now) - Thank MailEnable

Folks, I'm very sorry to say this, but after repeated cleanings of the queue, MailEnable is still creating thousand of thousands of emails and dropping the server. I'm shutting down the listserv so as to not pound folks. I know some list subscribers got hundreds of emails, and for that, I greatly apologize. MailEnable has done this once or twice in the past, but my previous fixes do not appear to be working now.

Because MailEnable decides to completely fill my hard drive, it also has an impact on my ColdFusion sites. The PDF at the ColdFusion Cookbook is down, and I'm sure my sites are probably responding poorly in general.

This is my plan. I'm looking for a corporate sponsor who would be willing to pick up a license for SmarterMail. In return, I'll exchange four months of credit on the listserv. I should be able to get the member list out of the piece of crap known as MailEnable. Once I have that, and hopefully a SmartMail license, I should be able to reset the list back up.

So - again - for those who got mail bombed today, I apologize. For those wanting CFCDev back up, trust me, I want it to, and I will try to return it as soon as possible.

Just to be clear - this has nothing to do with CFXHosting.com. They graciously host my box, the list, and the community sites here free of charge. I cannot thank them enough!

Just a thought. Maybe you could look at the hosted gmail program: https://www.google.com/hosted/Home. Couple that with a group in Google groups, and maybe you push all the tedious mail administration and the constant spam fight to them.

@Ray,

Why don't you just have a forum (like Galleon) for this. ListServs are so 1990 and you can see the problems with them. My biggest gripe with them is that there is no history with them, once a post is made it's gone unless you setup an archive with your mail program. Sure there are some ListServs that are more feature rich (like CF-Talk), but the majority of them are just email blasts.

Well, I like how listservs are delivered to your mail client. Of course, I use gmail fo rmine so it is still web based.

I've already got a corp. sponsor for SmarterMail. I'll be blogging about it later.

I share a server with a few other people (most notably Doug Hughes and Joe Rinehart) and we recently had to switch servers. We had MailEnable on the old server, and SmarterMail on the new one.

There was actually an import utility to bring all the old MailEnable accounts into Sm,arterMail.

Scott, is that import tool part of SmarterMail? Where can I find it. Also, did it import email as well? ie, if user X has messages in their account, will it suck it in?

To be honest, I did not do the import, it ws either Doug or Joe.

On the smartermail site there's a utility that can be downloaded. I had to call them to find it, but find it I did.

And, honestly, I prefered mailenable over smartermail. But then, I accidently left an open relay on in smartermail and had to call support (aaaaagh! not support!) to figure out how to lock it back down.

Oh, and the import only works so/so. But it's a good way to get starte on a new server.

I'm not sure how far along you are in getting a corporate sponsor, but I'm sure if you put a PayPal link up, you generous and supportive list members could help raise the funds.

I've got a sponsor. Right now the sites are ad supported, and that helps offset the expenses, which are pretty low. It basically pays me for the time it takes to keep the sites up.

I know this is a really old thread, but I was wondering what version of mailenable you where using back then and how you had it setup?

I've been using mailenable for about five or so years with really large lists using the enterprise edition with SQL2000 (now 2005) and have had no issues.

Just curious.

I don't think it was the size of the list - I think it was ME reacting badly to the lack of disk space, which technically is my fault, but it's reaction was crazy. I don't remember the version.
