Lost Review for March 14, 2007

Well, it is about time to show didn't suck. Last night wasn't "Heroes" level great, but darn tootin it was pretty good. First and foremost - how can you not love that line (and I may not get it exactly right):

How was I supposed to know they would have a sonic weapon fence?

Classic John Locke, and with next week being all about him, I am pretty darn excited to see it. Now some notes:

1) The List. The list was mentioned in season 1 as a tally of people from the plane that the Others wanted for... something. We haven't heard much of it since then. We did get to see the people taken a few weeks ago but frankly, learned next to nothing. (Except that they were still alive and unharmed.)

It is obvious that the Others are way past being True Believer's in Hanso's cause. We know they are willing to die for it, and shoot, Russian Dude actually thanked Locke for pushing him through the fence.

But outside of saving the world - they also seem to think that some people are better than others. That seems a bit sinister and contrary to their supposedly being the "good" guys.

2) The Fence. Anyone remember Running Man and the break out in the beginning? That fence was only harmful to people wearing collars. Did anyone else wonder if perhaps the fence would be harmless to non-Others? I mean - wouldn't there be dead animals and the like around the fense?

3) Claire and Jack are brothers. I think people have been predicting this for a while. It just reinforces the fact that everyone is connected. One thing that has interested me for a while is: What is the greater "Magic" going on here? I mean - everything else can be explained away. The Smoke Monster could be mechanical. The ghosts could be psychic projections. The Island could have healing properties. I'm fine with all that. But there is something greater that applies to the world at large. Look at how the Numbers helped Hurly win the lotto, and how could people connected so far in the past all end up in one plane?

Anyway, all in all, a darn good episode and my hopes are high for the rest of the season.

Comments

"I mean - wouldn't there be dead animals and the like around the fense?"

i -really- expected that the bird that claire and charlie released would be seen flying over the island (complete with symphonic uplifting music in the background to indicate the newfound hope that the bird represents) and the suddenly "BOOM!" into the fence.

that woulda been cool :)

Heh I was kind of expecting that as well.

"But there is something greater that applies to the world at large."

Everyone on the island is related to Kevin Bacon.

I think Lost is certainly on the rebound after a bit of slump...

Ray,

I don't think that the others think some people are better than others. The Russian Guy said that certain people are not on the list because they are "Flawed". Maybe flawed means they have either directly or indirectly resulted in someone's death?

I agree i think the past two episodes have been much better.

"Claire and Jack are brothers"

Am I missing something here? I must have missed that. What makes you think they are siblings?

Jack's father slept with Claire's mother. (Oh, and obviously I meant to say they were siblings, not brothers. ;)

To be technical - half-siblings.

cleverly deduced from the fact that they have the same daddy :)

That probably should have said - "Claire is Jack's step sister"

This was alluded to in a previous episode. I seem to recall Jack's father stopped at her house and visited her mother.

shit that's right, that was his father. just started watching a few episodes ago.

wait, his father is dead now, right?

aye. jack's father died in australia, which is why jack's on the island to begin with.

he had flown to australia to claim the body. the flight out of australia is the one that crashed.

so jack's father's body is on the island as well (in fact, back in season 1 there was an episode where they found the casket and jack kept having visions of his father looking quite mister roarke-ish)

Wow, I though I was the only sicko that hoped the bird would get fried....

and just for the heck of it, Half Sister, not step sister.

While that Locke line was great, I'd have to say this one was my favorite:

Sayid - "You said you didn't know about the C4."

Locke - "Well, I stand corrected."

I'm starting to love Locke again. This makes me happy.

I liked a lot of different parts of this episode.

Could Claire have acted more like the typical teen even down to the unattractive dye job? I was glad to see her calling Desmond out on the inconsistencies she had been seeing.

I don't know if it's just me but I am beginning to feel more sympathy for Jack's dad. We've only had to deal with Jack for 3 seasons. he had years of Mr. Sanctimonious.

Though part of me thinks he should have still been worrying about where Kate was, it was cool to see Sawyer just hanging out watching the goings on at the beach with his bemused expression. And I liked how Sun caught him before he could play Mr. NickName again.

What about the Russian dude saying that he knew a John Locke except he was paralyzed? Someone did/said something that cut him off before he finished that sentence.

Locke knew the fence was hot so he pushed him into it. So far Locke has blown up the hatch and now the house. Something is going on with him.

The Jack playing football scene really wasn't a big deal for me. You are stuck on an island and have vowed to get Ben better. Why not enjoy it some?

Guess I'm the only one that thought Claire looked better with black hair than as a blond.

But what do I know - I picked Duke to win over VCU.

@Scott, RE: Jack playing football scene really wasn't a big deal for me.

I personally thought this scene was very strange. Almost like it was a doppleganger--not the real Jack. He seemed too "happy" to be the real Jack. Also seemed too buddy-buddy with the other guys on the island.

Also, since it wasn't pointed out yet, this is the village we first see when The Others are introduced at the beginning of the 2nd season (or whatever episode we first see the Others witness the plane crash.)

i ALSO LIKE THE dOPPLE GANGER THEORY, IN THE FIRST SCENES FROM LAST NIGHT WHEN JACK WAS WITH JULIET AND THE OTHER GUY NEAR THE HOUSES IT APPEARES THIS JACK HAD A DIFFERENT TATTOO ON THE INSODE OF HIS LEFT ARM.
