You know your plane is safe when it's running Linux...

When I flew out this week I noticed something cool. Every seat had a small LCD screen running some type of 'entertainment' system. I wasn't too concerned as I had my iPhone (loaded with Ultimate Avengers 1 and 2, Iron Man, and Bourne 3), but I noticed something funny as we were about to take off. All the screens rebooted, and showed...

That's a bit fuzzy, but in case you can't tell, it's a Linux boot screen. Of course, my joy at seeing Linux was diminished when it began to reboot repeatedly. They didn't get it working right till about 30 minutes into the flight.

At least it wasn't vista...

@Todd,

How would passengers close all of the warnings prompts without a mouse?

Which airline?

I noticed a similar boot screen in a long (17+ hour) Thai Air flight to Bangkok. I'm going back that way soon but flying a different airline (14 hours to Taipei), I'll see if it has a similar boot screen. Thanks for all your work by the way!

What's also amazing is that there was a flight attendant (or someone) who knew enough Linux to get it working!

Ahh that looks like the in-flight entertainment system from Delta Airlines? I remember having to watch a similar rebooting sequence every 5 minutes during a 10+ hour flight to Ghana.

I'll tell you this much: if I ever get on a plane and see Windows running in the cockpit, I'm getting right back off.

OK, the idea of ANYTHING rebooting on a flight makes me nervous!

Cheers,

See, there isn't an OS built that doesn't have problems.

On the other hand...

If it isn't Boeing, I'm not going.

@Sam,

I'd guess Delta. When Tom and I flew to Milan to check out a venue, the flight back, the system was going wonky so they had to shut it down. Prior to that, mine rebooting twice while trying to use it.

What was funny, when they had to shut the system down, it also killed the seat controls in business class.

@Matt Woodward

But if you didn't see windows in the cockpit, you'd probably leave the plane too.

booo...

I've never flown a plane without windows, that would just be odd. I guess it would be similar to flying at night. I prefer window seats, but if I have to I'll take an aisle.
