Suggest a topic for CFUNTED 08, and win a pass!

I'm the track chair for the advanced track at CFUNITED. We are looking to fill another session and thought it would be fun to open it to the public. If you have an idea for a session, suggest the topic along with a speaker. I'll take the best 5 topics (best being relative of course) and create a survey for folks to vote. If your session is chosen, you get a free ticket to the conference. Note that in order for your session to eligible, you have to suggest a speaker who is also willing to do the presentation, and will be at CFUNITED.

Jim Priest's Gravatar I got nothing. :( Looks like Ant is well covered (which is great!) Is no one doing anything on CFEclipse??

I'd like to nominate myself to present "How to convince your wife the money would be better spent sending Jim to a CF conference than taking a family vacation" :)

marc esher's Gravatar There are a lot of talks about "unit testing with XXX" that are mostly intro level. But I'd like to see one on "how to test the really hard stuff". how to do programmatic integration testing.... and how to design your components, or refactor existing components, to make them easier to test.

I believe bill shelton would be good for this topic. i can send you his email offline if you like.

Raul Riera's Gravatar I think there should be a section about the future of ColdFusion, how is Adobe going to push this beuatiful language out there. Since so much focus has been set on Flex and AIR, I feel that presentation about ColdFusion marketting strategies and getting feedback from the community is something to be discussed of.

About the speakers, I dont know, some1 inside Adobe I assume.

Damon Gentry's Gravatar How about a topic on Release Management? I'd like to see someone discuss how a developer (or team) uses SVN, Ant, and Rsync (or ftp) to release code from one environment to the next.

Ron Gowen's Gravatar Working with and creating PDFs with ColdFusion. Presented by... well Ray Camden of course.

marc esher's Gravatar Damon, that topic will be presented. it was just added a few days ago.

if you can't wait until June, shoot me an email and we can talk!

Jim Ruzicka's Gravatar Deploying ColdFusion applications on J2EE servers. Whats required, road blocks, etc.
# Posted By Jim Ruzicka | 3/7/08 2:14 PM
Yaron Kohn's Gravatar Building an actual OO application from start to finish.
No theories, no concepts, no talks about design patterns. Just pure code explaining how an OO application is/was put together.
Ray, Sean Corefield, or Charlie Arehart

Tony Garcia's Gravatar I think this would be a good one: "Interface-Driven Application Design with Coldfusion" by either Clark Valberg or Hal Helms
# Posted By Tony Garcia | 3/7/08 3:02 PM
Sam Farmer's Gravatar @Ron: I'm doing a session on Creating, Manipulating and Printing PDFs that might be of interest to you.

Jeffrey Price's Gravatar How about, "How to present at CFUNITED"? I've checked and I'm available!

Ok, getting serious. I think it would be a great idea to have a "CF Open Source: How to Give Back" presentation. One thing that has really pulled me back into CF the past six months or so is that great open source community. I'll nominate any of the big open source guys (Ray, Dan, Brian, etc) for the topic.
# Posted By Jeffrey Price | 3/8/08 7:47 AM
Jeff Coughlin's Gravatar +1 for an open source presentation.
# Posted By Jeff Coughlin | 3/8/08 4:35 PM
Shaun's Gravatar 'To prototype or not yo prototype that is the session'

perhaps Hal Helms of Clark Valberg could host...

John lyons's Gravatar building and integrating business application with live cycle: Server Side Objects.
# Posted By John lyons | 3/9/08 12:36 AM
J.B's Gravatar Advanced Techniques With The ColdBox Framework
with Luis Majano. It would be so cool!
Minneapolis is too far and Prince is not even there anymore!

Mary Jo Sminkey's Gravatar Well, now that New Atlanta has announced an open source version of BlueDragon J2EE, we will definitely need a session on how that can be used, examples of deploying it on J2EE, future goals for development, etc. Vince Bonfanti or one of the other New Atlanta guys of course to present.
# Posted By Mary Jo Sminkey | 3/10/08 8:39 PM
Lola LB's Gravatar A session on how to "grow more CF developers" and what works and what doesn't. For instance, getting ColdFusion into high school and college curriculums. Any summer computer camps using CF to teach kids how to programs? Etc. etc.
# Posted By Lola LB | 3/11/08 6:37 AM
Shaun's Gravatar 'To prototype or not to prototype that is the session'

perhaps Hal Helms or Clark Valberg could host...

John Farrar's Gravatar Shaun... I am figuring Ray got the first post. But they say the third times a charm... perhaps you should post it one more time, eh?
# Posted By John Farrar | 3/11/08 9:27 AM
Ron Gowen's Gravatar Maybe you could get Geoff Bowers to come out and do a preso on FarCry, or perhaps that was Jeff voluntering if Geoff can't make it.

John Farrar's Gravatar How about ColdFusion and Next Gen Browser Features
(Getting ready to interact with the new features in FF3 and IE8)

Jelka Kosir's Gravatar + 1 for Advanced Techniques With The ColdBox Framework (Luis Majano)

Don Li's Gravatar Hi Ray,

I'd recommend
Topic: Advanced Javascript Object Programming Technique for Cold Fusion 8 (technical).

Value: Greatly Enhance Use (for user) Experience (business)

Speaker: Sam Farmer (he's definitely superb with the topic and hope he'll be willing to...)

A bit more detail on the topic.
* using js class in relation to cfajaxproxy
* binding
...

Thank you.

Don

Joshua Cyr's Gravatar Lots of good suggestions here. I think a session on extending ext and yui bundled with CF8 would be good. Some good blog entries on that lately, especially with CFGrid. Something covering manipulating via JS: skins, functionality that wasn't already exposed, etc. An expert with FCK would be really handy, covering its JS api.

John Allred's Gravatar How about something on Blaze DS.
Maybe a presentation showing a simple CF, Blaze DS and Flex app being built? Maybe Tom Jordahl will be at Cfunited?
# Posted By John Allred | 3/20/08 6:27 PM
Raymond Camden's Gravatar Lots of good ideas here guys. As just an FYI, on Monday I'll be looking to make a list of 5 items, so if you have any last requests, make it now.
# Posted By Raymond Camden | 3/20/08 6:46 PM
Jelka Kosir's Gravatar Few things that I would also be interested in:

1. A "TOP 10" presentation of best/most useful CF projects on riaforge (useful for developers) like CodeCorp etc. (I never have the time to investigate what could be useful for me are for and would appreciate a brief show-of and a few use cases for each project.)

2. CF integration with popular javascript libs like prototype, jquery, ext. Building rich clients.

3. Advanced techniques for dynamic forms (corporate software), applying rules to forms, advanced validation techniques, techniques for those who cannot use cookies (preserving state - for example auto saving current work to temp databases …).
# Posted By Jelka Kosir | 3/21/08 5:15 AM
Qasim Rasheed's Gravatar Few topics that I'll be interested in

1. Advance SQL (tips and tricks) e.g. how to do analytical queries, query optimization.

2. Software developer process e.g. FLiP or SCRUM.

3. Example use cases of integrating various Java open source application with ColdFusion e.g. iText, Apache FOP.

Raymond Camden's Gravatar So I'm a bit slow. I saw a lot in various areas here. It's kinda hard to narrow it down. But I think this may be fair, and I need to follow up with the speakers:

Advanced Coldbox with Luis Majano
A Prototyping class with either Clark V or Hal H.
Advanced JS with Sam Farmer (this one didn't get dupes I think, but I'm exercising my authority here).
Open Source CF related (I'd do this)

Before I open this up to voting - does anyone have any MAJOR objections (please note - I can't do everything so even if yours wasn't picked, try not to complain ;)
# Posted By Raymond Camden | 4/7/08 11:55 AM
Raymond Camden's Gravatar Shaun, your suggestion one. Please email me asap so I can hook you up.
# Posted By Raymond Camden | 5/14/08 11:19 AM
Sam Farmer's Gravatar I'm glad this suggestion won. And not just for Shaun's sake but because it sounds a great session!
# Posted By Sam Farmer | 5/14/08 12:14 PM
Kevin Penny's Gravatar How about multi physical server clustering with J2EE

Multi instance on one physical server clustering has been done, but I don't see anyone doing it beyond a single pysical server in a demo etc.
# Posted By Kevin Penny | 5/29/08 8:38 AM
Raymond Camden's Gravatar Kevin, Shaun's suggestion was picked - the Clark/Hal one.
