Lost premiers tonight

Just a quick reminder that the season premier of Lost is tonight. Frankly I've never heard of this show so I'll probably skip it. Sounds like a mix of Gilligan's Island and the Twilight Zone.

Ok, so yes, I will watch it and I'm already counting the hours. But I'll be posting my review up over at Geek the Tube, so please check there for my thoughts on the opener.

Lost for May 24 - The WTF Edition

This is going to be a short post. Lost airs here 9-11 and it is approaching midnight here and since my body still thinks it is 2 AM, I'm quite tired.

Before I touch the whole WTF part of the show - let me just say that this show had some of the best lines ever. The whole Sawyer/Evil Blonde Chick (yes, I forgot her name again) conversation was classic. Charlie's part was also great. I've said before that he wasn't my favorite character, but tonight he really shone. (And then he died. Ah well.)

What about that map that Ben had? Did anyone else seem to think it looked a little bit... I don't know, Playskool? My friend said it looked like he went to the Lost Restaurant and that was the place mat. Seemed kind of silly for him to be doing precise measurements on it.

So now the big question is.... what in the heck are they going to do for three more seasons? I mean - they left the island, and while life sucked for Jack (and possibly Kate), what can the writers do now? If the whole thing was a dream... well that would be a major copout. If they spend the next three seasons showing what happened to folks... that would just plain suck. I'd almost rather them simply end now. It would be a great way to end. Sure, they wouldn't have answered everything (Black Smoke/Giant Foot/Hurley still fat), but from a story perspective, it would be a great way to go out.

So here is my question folks - what in the you know what are they going to do next?

Lost for May 16 - "...blow them all up to Hell"

Ok, so I know I said I wouldn't do a quote again, but I'm pretty sure this was in the previews from last week anyway. As it stands - this is going to be a pretty darn short review as this was, almost entirely, a lead up to the season finale next week (which I do not get to watch on my nice HDTV as I'll be in Vegas).

This weeks episode focused on Charlie. I like Charlie - but his past just kind of bores me. All of his flashbacks related to the best memories of his life - leading up to his sacrifice to shut down the Looking Glass - the underwater Dharma station that is blocking all outside communication. While an underwater station has been mentioned before (right?), I don't think it was shown on the map.

Of course, Charlie gets down to the hatch and discovers it wasn't abandoned. In the preview for next week we see him getting beat up by, we assume, the Others manning the station.

We discover what Jack has been up to. Along with Blondie and Crazy French Lady (have I said I'm bad with names?) he was planning a way to fight back against the Others. This plan goes to heck though when Ben returns and moves up the attack.

Oh - and Desmond is convinced that if Charlie sacrifices himself, Claire and the baby will get rescued. Now I think this is an important point. He saw Claire and the baby enter a helicopter. That doesn't necessarily mean that everyone is going to be rescued. And with the show lasting for a few more years, it is highly doubtful. Watch Claire, and Claire alone (I mean with child of course) leave during the finale.

Lost for May 9 - "His name is Jacob"

Holy. Crap. Ok, so I'm hooked again. I can't remember the last time I about broke my remote hitting pause and play to try to grab a screen shot. This episode was absolutely amazing. I won't do a normal review of all the events but just talk about the high points.

First and foremost - I believe others on this blog have mentioned that perhaps a third group was involved. Now we have proof. Ben was responsible (along with this other group) for massacring the Dharma Initiative. These "natives" apparently didn't care for the Dharma folks - but I wonder why? As far as we can see, the Dharma folks are a bunch of hippie scientists. In the past we had seen them kill people whey they needed to, but now we know that those acts were commited by the Natives (I vote we call them that).

The whole encounter in the hut with Jacob. Part of me didn't like it. It felt a like a basic horror flick. But - it was kinda cool. This brings up the whole whispers thing. I don't think we've had the whispers since season one. Are the Natives some kind of psychic power? Spirits?

Who is Jacob? Ghost of a Dharma employee? A spirit from the Island? Why would Ben be able to talk to him and need to ask Locke what he heard? Or is Ben crazy - knows he is crazy - and thinks Locke really heard something?

Anyone think the mass killing is the "Incident" referred to in the video from season 2? But the scientist there in the video was a Dharma guy, so that wouldn't make sense. Unless Dharma sent more folks in later on.

Who here thinks Juliette is really helping out? I maybe believe it. Her reactions to Ben make sense now if she realizes Ben is crazy. Oh, and when Jack said he was thinking about what to do, and that was his excuse for not saying anything, I felt like screaming.

I'm kinda getting the feeling that Dharma went to the Island because they knew something was a bit special there. But the Island is far more powerful, and dangerous, then they expected. At this point, maybe Dharma is not even close to being involved anymore, and what we have is basically a super freaky Island (ok, not the best name) as the main protagonist?

Lost review for April 11

Well it is about darn time. The past few episodes have been ... ok ... but tonight's episode really got me back into Lost again. Juliette's back story was pretty interesting, and definitely taught us quite a few things:

  • On the Island, if a woman gets pregnant, she dies. Now that is pretty darn interesting. The Island seems to heal everyone else (except Ben), why does it kill pregnant women?
  • Not everyone on the Island knows the full story. It was obvious that Juliette certainly was in the dark about a few things. It is probably safe to think that only Ben knows everything going on.

I did have a problem with the episode, and this is a major spoiler. I've said for a while that Juliette was more evil than Ben. Now we know it. But I don't get her motivation. She obviously wants to help solve the issue with the pregnant women and she was obviously very frustrated with Ben and the Others. So why is she helping Ben? I would assume that there is another way off the Island, and he is offering that to her - but that is not how I read the scene. She seemed like a "true believer". We know the Others believe they are doing good. Maybe Juliette has truly joined the fold?

Lost Review for March 14, 2007

Well, it is about time to show didn't suck. Last night wasn't "Heroes" level great, but darn tootin it was pretty good. First and foremost - how can you not love that line (and I may not get it exactly right):

Lost is one step away...

I don't know about you guys - but Lost is about one step away from becoming a "Must watch right now" to a "Will DVR and watch when I have time." Tonight's episode just bugged me. The whole lead up to tonight's episode was that we would learn the answer to 3 questions.

Where are the kids? Well the guy that Sawyer rescued said they were brought to a better place. We also saw they were alive. Well gee, does that really answer anything? I mean I wouldn't have minded if they gave a good answer and it lead to ten more questions, but that was a complete and utter rip off. I mean I knew the Others have no problem killing people, but I was reasonably sure they had not killed the kids.

What do Jack's tattoos mean? Holy crap was that back story horrible. He is a leader - an outside. I think we already knew that. And even then - when the Other woman, the sheriff, did the translation, he said it wasn't the real meaning.

And the sad thing is - I don't even remember what the third question was.

The only thing "lost" this season is the direction and story telling. They better turn it around or the show will get canceled.

Lost is Found Tonight

Don't forget that Lost returns tonight. The first episode (8 CST) looks to be a recap show, with the real first episode at 9 CST. The rest of the season will all be new shows with no repeats. The question is - can Lost reclaim the throne of top geek show away from Heroes and Battlestar Galactica?

Lost review for November 8

I really should stop calling these reviews as I mainly just jot notes down while I watch the show. :) Anyway, here is what happened:

Lost Review for 11-1-06

Sorry about this being late folks. Cox is going to fix up my net access today (supposedly) and I'll be back online for good. (Or until it breaks again.)

Another great episode - unfortunately the last we will see of Eco (unless he returns as other dead castaways have). In this episode we get to see what happened to Eco after his brother flew away in the plane with the drug dealers. He returns to his brother's church and helps stop a gang of thieves from stealing drugs from the village. In doing so though he desecrates the church and the villages close it up. The local doctor tells Eco he now "owes" his brother a new church. (And now we know why he was building a church.)

Back in real time, Eco is visited by the ghost of his brother. He goes off into the forest to find the plane where his brother's body was. During his trek we see the black smoke. (Woohoo! I loved the black smoke monster.) Locke (and friends) figure this out, and since they wanted to go to Pearl station anyway, they follow Eco.

At Pearl, they play with the TVs a bit and end up finding a new location and a new person. The person wears an eye patch. Is he an Other? If so - I don't think we have seen him before. He looked more like another castaway perhaps.

Eco is outside the hatch when the ghost of his brother approaches. Eco follows him. His brother tells Eco that he has to confess his sins. Eco however says he did what he had to do to survive and protect his brother. This upsets his brother - and he goes away. Eco follows him and what was once his brother is now the black smoke monster. Oh, and it's pissed. The monster picks him up and slams him against the trees - and then finally against the ground.

Locke (and friends) leave the hatch to find Eco just about to die. As he passes, he whispers to Locke that they are next.

So - back to the Others and Jack. Ben tells Jack that their original plan was to break him, gain his trust, and make Jack feel for them so they they could use him. Now Ben says this is out the window since Jack knows about the cancer. Ben says he wants Jack to perform the surgery but won't force him to. He then asks him to attend the funeral of the girl who died. The funeral is pretty weird. They burn the body on the water while playing some pretty freaky music.

Later on - blonde Other girl (yes, I forgot her name again) plays a video while talking to Jack. The video is a secret message saying that some of the Others want to change things, and that Jack should let Ben die on the operating table.

Personally - I think Blonde Other Girl is doing exactly what Ben said they would try to do - gain his trust. I'd be willing to bet she is the one in charge - or at least orchestrating all of this to gain Jack's trust.
